Firebrand Bosses: Meghan Spencer of Spencer Studios

It's time for us to shout about how much we love our local community!!!! This is one of our very favorite things to do, and this month, we want to tell you all about Meghan Spencer of Spencer Studios

Meghan is a firecracker. Her bubbly energy lights up a room, and you've probably experienced this first-hand because she's a total networking badass. Meghan has been a huge supporter of Firebrand since we got started over the summer, and we love seeing her smiling face at all of our different events! Probably the coolest thing has been seeing the branding side of her photography business take off -- especially since that's something that has developed as we've gotten to know her through our Visioning and Support Nights here at Firebrand.

You also might remember her as the gal who hooked us up with the most badass brand headshots a Firebrand team ever did see! Don't know what we're talking about? Check out how cute we are on Instagram, or in this blog post!

Meghan Spencer, owner of Spencer Studios, is an award winning photographer based in Kansas City. Spencer Studios specializes in weddings, engagements, and boudoir.  Additionally, Meghan loves business and branding photography for creative entrepreneurs in the Kansas City area.

As always, we have the same few questions that we asked, but we also add on a question written by the previous interviewee -- Tay Daliese!

And now, we'll let Meghan take it away!

1) In one sentence, how would you describe your business?

Spencer Studios is a photography studio that specializes in weddings and boudoir.

2) Where were you when you started your business? What led to that moment of deciding "I'm going to take this idea to the next level"?

Before I opened my own business I was working for a family friend who was a photographer.  I had a moment during that summer job where I remember thinking, "this…this is what I need to do for the rest of my life!" and that was it!  I was pretty bummed out when that photographer closed his business, but one morning I was moping about (I had really liked that job!) and I just thought to myself, why don’t I just do this on my own!  So I made a (terrible) website that day, and the rest is history!

3) Of all the different paths your business could take, what's one place you can see your business in five years?

Oh man that’s so hard!  In 5 years I hope to be shooting in more locations (destination wedding in Ireland anyone?), and to have or be working on either a workshop or mentorship program.  All that being said, I’ve learned recently that it’s really important to be open to where life/business/passions take you, and to give yourself some grace when you decide to head down a new path…so who knows ;)

4) What is your entrepreneurial superpower?

I think my entrepreneurial superpower is my love for people.  It drives pretty much every decision I make in my business.  I believe that that love has really come back around in ways I never predicted or imagined.

5) What is next for you? Anything big on the horizon? Upcoming events or releases you want to pimp out?

2017 brought a new business venture for me, and I’m so very excited about it!!  I have added to my business a branch in business and branding photography for creative entrepreneurs!  In short, working along side the graphic elements of a brand to create imagery/video to tell the business’s story.  This came out of a passion for branding from my advertising degree, and love of all of the amazing entrepreneurs I have met here in KC, and I couldn’t be more excited to see where this new path takes me!

6) BONUS QUESTION: What is the most interesting thing about your family?

I think the most interesting thing other people think about my family is that my husband and I are high school sweethearts.  We met when I was 15, and at this point have been together for 11+ years.

Firebrand Bosses: Tay Daliese of Tay Daliese Photo

It's time for us to shout about how much we love our local community!!!! This is one of our very favorite things to do, and this month, we want to tell you all about Tay Daliese of Tay Daliese Photo

photo by Tay's assistant, Jake Reese

photo by Tay's assistant, Jake Reese

Tay hosted a boudoir marathon here at Firebrand last month, and we absolutely loved having her here in our space! She's a total trooper, rolling with some unpredictable crazypants situations that popped up while she was here. We are love her bubbly energy, her uncrushable spirit, and her rockstar photography skillz.

Tay is a couples and boudoir photographer who enjoys mysteries, breakfast foods, & power naps. It's easiest to catch her on Instagram  or on her website that, in her own words, she "spend[s] an embarrassing amount of time trying to get just right." (Don't we all??)

As always, we have the same few questions that we asked, but we also add on a question written by the previous interviewee -- Keely of Adorned Decor!

And now, we'll let Tay take it away!

1) In one sentence, how would you describe your business?

Tay Daliese Photo is an experience where your photographer's priority is showcasing you in your photos rather than just your smiles.

2) Where were you when you started your business? What led to that moment of deciding "I'm going to take this idea to the next level"?

I got 4 e-mails to shoot weddings in one day after boosting a post on fb from a wedding I loved. I was still in the hobby-esque stage of shooting. I was charging people way less than what I was worth to get people into my portfolio and was experimenting a lot. I sat down, made a mini-business plan and the next day set up my business on legal zoom and got a bank account.

3) Of all the different paths your business could take, what's one place you can see your business in five years?

If everything goes my way I want to eventually own a natural light studio wherever I end up. My current plans don't see me in Kansas City past the next two years. My goal has always been to go full time by 2020. (I work full time for Cerner so it's a little hard for me to get done everything I want.)

4) What is your entrepreneurial superpower?

I book 110% of couples/people I talk to. If I can get myself in front of someone, I can sell myself. I've been described more than once as having "the gift of gab."

Also, the 110% thing is a lie but both brides I didn't book after getting in front of them refer me to all their friends and tell them I'm who they should have hired. I'll take that as a win.

5) What is next for you? Anything big on the horizon? Upcoming events or releases you want to pimp out?

I actually have two things! I'm working with the amazing as heck Annie Austen on a lifestyle blog. I'll be doing a lot of the photos and upkeep of the actual aesthetic of the blog (I code and design in my spare time) so check out www.theaustenadventures.com -- it just launched this week!

Second, people ask about my marathons: I plan on doing another at Firebrand Collective in the spring for those that could not make the deadline this winter! I only have room for 4-5 girls per event so I usually sell out quick. Join "Tay Daliese's Boudie Babes" on fb or e-mail me at hello@tay-daliese.com to be put on my mailing list so you're one of the first to know when I do my spring marathon! Should be around March/April

6) BONUS QUESTION: Who are your boss babe crushes? (You know you creep on their Insta all the time and dream to be them!)

Oh my goodness! I have so many, but I think the ones I creep on daily without fail would be @stuckwithpins, @brittcrowe (who is an insanely talented friend of mine), & to mix things up I love following fitness instas so @texadian_ who is gorgeous and whose life is so awesome to follow.

Thank you for sharing with us, Tay. We are so honored to know you!!!! Y'all, go give Tay a follow over on Instagram: @taydaliese and check out her website: http://tay-daliese.com/

Firebrand Bosses: Keely of Adorned Decor

It's time for us to shout about how much we love our local community!!!! This is one of our very favorite things to do, and this month, we want to tell you all about Keely Gilbert of Adorned Decor. You might remember her from last week's blog post, where we featured the workshop she hosted here at Firebrand Collective!

Keely is the maker behind Adorned Decor. She creates beautiful hand made signs and home decor that help tell your family's story and make your house a home! Most days you can find her in her workshop (aka garage) building and painting signs, usually with a cup of coffee nearby and Pandora pumping in the background.

As always, we have the same few questions that we asked, but we also add on a question written by the previous interviewee -- so question #6 is from Maddie of Fête Box!

And now, we'll let Keely take it away!

1) In one sentence, how would you describe your business?

Adorned Decor specializes in meaningful hand made signs and home decor for your life and home.

2) Where were you when you started your business? What led to that moment of deciding "I'm going to take this idea to the next level"?

I started Adored Decor back in 2015 when I was at a crossroads in my life. I was wanting to start to new career path using my creativity and doing something I was passionate and excited about but I didn't know exactly what that would look like. After dreaming and planning for months I took a leap of faith and opened my shop in October 2015. It quickly turned into a business and I am blessed to now be working and creating out of my home full time.

3) Of all the different paths your business could take, what's one place you can see your business in five years?

Thinking 5 years down the road is so hard! I wish I had a great answer for that question, but to be honest I don't even know what the next few months brings! I will say, that wherever it is in 5 years I hope to still be enjoying it and making a difference in peoples lives and homes! My husband would answer this as "in 5 years every home in America will have an Adorned Decor product in their home" haha He has lofty dreams! ;)

4) What is your entrepreneurial superpower?

I would say my entrepreneurial superpower is being a risk-taker- especially with power tools. ;)

5) What is next for you? Anything big on the horizon? Upcoming events or releases you want to pimp out?

Well I recently had my first big hand lettering/sign making workshop (shout out to Firebrand!) and I had such a blast that I hope to do more of those in the future! I also recently came out with a mug collection so I'm excited to see where those go!

6) BONUS QUESTION: [from Maddie of Fête Box!] Recently there was a popular businesswoman whose video went viral describing how as a young girl growing up, her father would ask her what her biggest failure of the day was. He would celebrate her failures. Her father wasn't particularly hoping she would fail, but rather was inquiring about her resilience and ability to learn from failure (even on the minute level). After hearing this, it is something I've started asking my daughter daily and thus paying way more attention to my own failures vulnerabilities. Lord knows I've had---and still continue to have---my fair share of failures! So, what failures have you experienced (big or small) and how they have influenced you?

I think every business experiences failures, whether big or small, so I can say I've definitely had a few of those! A few that come to mind are when I've released new product or put myself out there on social media and then all I get back are crickets. In those moments I have to give myself a pep talk and remind myself that my value and worth is not dependent on how many likes, comments, or purchases I get. I learn to keep pushing through, practice gratitude, and celebrate others in my industry that are rocking it.

Thank you for sharing with us, Keely. We are so honored to know you!!!! Y'all, go give Keely a follow over on Instagram: @adorned_decor and check out her Etsy shop over at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AdornedDecorShop or on Facebook!

Firebrand Bosses: Maddie of Fête Box

It's time for us to shout about how much we love our local community!!!! This is one of our very favorite things to do, and this month, we want to tell you all about Maddie of Fête Box

firebrand_spotlight_maddie_fetebox_headshot

Maddie is the Founder and Chief Party Curator at Fête Box (Pronounced fℰt), a stylish party-in-a-box service for any occasion. With a degree in Fine Art and an event-based professional background, Maddie uses her love for unique parties to create beautiful Fete Boxes that make party throwing effortless.

When she’s not planning everyday occasions or plotting new parties you will likely find her being silly with her preschool-age daughter, drinking craft beer with her husband, collecting eggs from her backyard urban chicken coop, or tending to her garden.

In this Firebrand Bosses series, we have the same few questions that we will ask of each creative, but we will also add on a question written by the previous interviewee in the future. Maddie contributed a question to ask our next interviewee, but we didn't want her to feel left out (being our very first interview!) so we took it upon ourselves to come up with a bonus question of our own to ask her!

And now, we'll let Maddie take it away!

1) In one sentence, how would you describe your business?

Fête Box designs and creates Pinterest-worthy parties and events for all of life's occasions.

firebrand_spotlight_maddie_fetebox

2) Where were you when you started your business? What led to that moment of deciding "I'm going to take this idea to the next level"?

Starting Fête Box was a total turning point for me. At the time, I was staying at home with my young daughter and working as a freelance designer creating invitations. And though I have a long history of entertaining for family, friends, and working in event-based industries, I hadn't really entertained the idea of merging the two ideas. An "ah-ha!" moment or two later I realized that I was already half-way through my business concept by selling invitations, and Fête Box was the next most natural step forward. Supporting other women and moms became paramount to me as I heard stories from almost every woman I talked to who (thanks to sites like Pinterest) complained of feeling behind in life, or less worthy, than other more crafty women. Determined to make every lady/hostess/mom/aunt/sister feel amazing through creating beautiful parties and everyday occasions is totally the "why" behind Fête Box.

3) Of all the different paths your business could take, what's one place you can see your business in five years?

You know, I wish I had the answer to this at my fingertips. My business is still young and I am definitely still learning tons. I'm not sure exactly where Fête Box will be in 5 years, but I definitely know it will be somewhere amazing! I do hope to be working with more companies hosting launch parties, larger-scale annual events, etc. along with entertaining the manufacturing side of party goods.

4) What is your entrepreneurial superpower?

My entrepreneurial superpower is definitely my ability to make (or figure out how to manufacture) just about anything. Thanks, art school!

5) What is next for you? Anything big on the horizon? Upcoming events or releases you want to pimp out?

We're ramping up for the holiday season right now. We have a seasonal Fête Box that is called Elf Made Easy, which is an awesome kit that provides parents with an entire month of pre-made scenes for their popular holiday Elf. It comes with a parent handbook and everything a person needs to rock the elf with ease. It is, without a doubt, our most popular seasonal box!

6) BONUS QUESTION: What's your favorite ice cream flavor and where do you get it? Is it at a grocery store, or do you get it at a favorite ice cream shop in town?

This is a hard one. I'm honestly not a huge ice cream fan......I know, criminal right? I do love anything with tons of chocolate though!

Thank you for sharing with us, Maddie. We are so honored to know you!!!! Y'all, go give Maddie a follow over on Instagram: @fetebox_kc and check out her awesome website over at http://fetebox.com/
